Top Qualifying Conditions for Medical Marijuana

Understand Florida's medical cannabis criteria for 2026. Review state requirements and learn if your diagnosis qualifies.

What conditions qualify for medical marijuana in Florida?

Under Florida Amendment 2 and current state laws, patients diagnosed with one of the following debilitating medical conditions are eligible for a medical marijuana registry card:

  • Cancer: Patients undergoing active treatment or managing chronic symptoms/pain from oncological conditions.
  • Epilepsy and Seizure Disorders: Refractory epilepsy or recurring seizures that do not respond to standard medical therapies.
  • Glaucoma: Severe ocular pressure or vision loss that has not responded to traditional drops or surgeries.
  • HIV/AIDS: Positive diagnosis of Human Immunodeficiency Virus or Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome.
  • Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD): Diagnosed PTSD causing clinically significant distress or functional impairment.
  • Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS): Also known as Lou Gehrig's disease, a progressive neurodegenerative disease.
  • Crohn's Disease: Chronic inflammatory bowel disease causing debilitating digestive symptoms.
  • Parkinson's Disease: Chronic neurodegenerative movement disorder causing severe motor symptoms.
  • Multiple Sclerosis (MS): Chronic autoimmune disease affecting the central nervous system.
  • Medical Conditions of the Same Kind or Class: Chronic nonmalignant pain, severe anxiety, insomnia, or other conditions comparable to those listed above.
  • Terminal Illness: A condition diagnosed by a physician other than the certifying physician as terminal with a prognosis of under a year.
  • Chronic Nonmalignant Pain: Pain caused by a qualifying medical condition that persists beyond the usual course of that disease.

Understanding "Same Kind or Class" and Physician Discretion

The Florida Legislature included a clause allowing certifying doctors to recommend medical cannabis for symptoms and conditions of the "same kind or class" as the named conditions. This gives qualified physicians like Dr. Kelly Ennix King the clinical discretion to approve patients suffering from conditions such as:

  • Severe and persistent muscle spasms
  • Chronic anxiety and depression
  • Severe insomnia or sleep disorders
  • Rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis
  • Fibromyalgia and neuropathic pain
  • Inflammatory bowel syndrome (IBS)

Clinical Evaluation Process

Even if you do not have a formal diagnosis of a listed condition, Dr. Kelly will evaluate your full medical history during your appointment. We help you obtain medical records if needed to confirm eligibility. Ready to get started? Check out our Evaluations Guide.

How to Document Your Condition

To ensure a smooth evaluation at Releaf MD, we recommend patients bring proof of diagnosis or treatments. This can include doctor notes, diagnostic scans (X-rays, MRIs), list of prescriptions, or pathology reports. However, if you do not have these files, Dr. Kelly will conduct a full physical examination during your visit.
